Two Michelin stars. Chef of the Year 2015. World’s Best Female Chef 2016. And that’s only the half of it. Chef Dominique Crenn continues to defy the laws of culinary gravity with her incredibly personal and artistic menus. After seeing Atelier Crenn pop up on Netflix-series Chef’s Table and nearly every San Francisco culinary “must-eat” list, we flocked to our sister city to experience it for ourselves.
Originally from Brittany, France, Chef Crenn combines local and sustainable ingredients into modern French masterpieces. Titled “poetic culinaria”, the menu is literally a poem of beautifully scripted tastings. With an ever-changing menu, we experienced upwards of 20 plates, each drawing on the chef’s childhood memories.
The cuisine wasn’t the only thing we were head-over-heels for. The interior of Atelier Crenn draws on Chef Crenn’s inspirations from her late father and is modeled after his personal studio in France. Minimal and refined with a taste of mid-century, the restaurant itself is a perfect background for experiencing such personal plates.
