Earlier this month, our KKDL designers Jill and Lori were thrilled to head out for their latest model home install in Elk Grove—a Calistoga, modern farmhouse inspired home! As designers (with a love of Napa!), we thoroughly enjoyed designing this home while showcasing this style for a range of potential home buyers. We love showing how you can transform a house into a home with ideas and inspiration that are easy to implement in their own space. We asked for a bit more behind the scenes!
Q: What was the inspiration for the style of the home?
J: “We love the timeless and welcoming elements of a Modern Farmhouse. We also live in an area where we can incorporate a farm to table lifestyle. Creating a Modern Farmhouse style is a great way to celebrate our casual, family-oriented values.”
L: “We really wanted to incorporate the crisp and classic contrast of black and white accented with architectural details and natural elements for a fresh take on a farmhouse—the character is in the shiplap!”
Q: What was the biggest goal you wanted to accomplish?
L: “We wanted everyone to walk in and feel right at home. With rich cognacs and brushed brass tones layered throughout, it is welcoming and easy for anyone to imagine themselves calling this house their ‘home’.”
Q: Tell me about a certain space or room that you loved designing/installing most.
J: “A farmhouse kitchen is the heart of the home. We particularly enjoyed integrating items that are synonymous with farmhouse stylings such as white cabinets, a large farmhouse sink and open shelving. The large sink is perfect for arranging flowers or preparing vegetables from the garden while the open shelving, illuminated with a brushed brass sconce, is terrific for displaying cookbooks and mason jars.”
L: “We also love the contrasting cabinetry in the kitchen with a white perimeter, black island, and marble-looking quartz counters! In addition, the master bedroom and bathroom were so much fun to design! With black shiplap on the ceiling in the bedroom and a fun black and white patterned floor in the bathroom, this master suite is full of character.”
Q: Tell me about a design obstacle that you overcame to make the project a success.
J: “Painting the wall and ceiling color white throughout most of the home took a little reassuring, but it adds the perfect foundation for a Modern Farmhouse home in a beautiful, yet simple way.”
L: “An entire house of white walls may seem a bit underwhelming until you realize all of the character that comes from the shiplap. We also ran into a few questions about doing shiplap on the ceiling, let alone in black, but as we always say, the ceiling is the fifth wall!”
Q: Tell me about the kind of family you envision loving this home.
J: “With its open floor plan and casual ambiance, we envision a busy family enjoying this home. Rustic wood furniture pieces make this home particularly family friendly. A dark wood dining table is a great gathering place to share a family dinner together and a large wood coffee table is perfect for a game of cards.”
Q: What do you think a possible buyer will most love in this space for their own home?
J: “A prospective homeowner can re-create many of the elements featured in this model home. A fresh coat of white paint on shiplap walls or ceilings will bring a farmhouse feeling into their own home. Simple decorative items like galvanized metal pots, vintage wall décor and adding open shelves also add to this casual aesthetic.”
