The KKDL team has been hard at work on designing fabulous interiors for model homes to be completed this fall. Follow along through the process here on the KKDL blog and on Instagram!
Q: What was the inspiration for the style of the models?
We were inspired most by the land that these homes are being built on. Gum Ranch has been owned and farmed by the late Irving Gum for at least the past 70-years where it was successfully planted with strawberries, pumpkins, and wheat. We wanted to create five very different, yet distinct, models that give nod to the rich history of Gum Ranch. This lead us to model concepts including Heavenly Hazelnut, California Poppy, Tailored Undertones, Harbor Mist and Dead on Denim.
See our Instagram feed @KerrieLKelly for more insight into each one of these schemes!
Q: What was the biggest goal you wanted to accomplish?
We wanted these models to tie in the history of the land as well as relate to all prospective home buyers. There truly is something for everyone in these homes! We also didn’t want them to feel like “models”. We want each potential buyer to walk in and feel like all they would need to do is bring their clothes, kick their feet up and feel as they are home.
Q: What aspect of the process was your favorite?
We loved letting the creativity flow with furniture selection and layering in fabrics through pillows and bedding that speak to each color palette. You really start to see the schemes come to life with the small details. Also, we enjoyed getting to be imaginative with colors and patterns on walls –a little paint goes a long way! 😉
Q: Tell me about a design obstacle that you overcame to make the project a success.
Dealing with odd shaped, narrow or just simply ‘awkward’ rooms can sometimes prove to be quite a challenge. A particularly long and narrow living room had our brains working, but with a little imagination, what started as our least favorite space to design, quickly became our absolute favorite space in all five of the models combined!
Q: What do you think a possible buyer will love most about these models for their own home?
While every model is distinct, we set each backdrop with just enough neutral elements that any family can move in and make it their own. Layer with area rugs of different textures, sprinkle in a few drape panels and pillows and “voila!”, the simple pretty pieces bring in the color, softness and added dimension perfect for making a house a home.
