Probably one of the most nerve racking aspects of decorating your own space is figuring out what goes where, and if you can mix your current décor with some other new pieces you really love. Thanks to one of our current clients, we’ve been asked our favorite question for this month’s “How Do I…”– How can I mix colors and patterns in the same space?
While it may seem tricky, it’s actually quite simple to mix patterns and colors in one room (though designers won’t tell you that, it’s kind of a secret). We’re going to take you step by step in mixing color and pattern and provide a few pictures along the way to give you a better feel for what we’re explaining. Ready?
Step 1 Play Favorites
You know how mothers aren’t supposed to pick a favorite child? Well, this isn’t like that. Pick your absolute favorite print or color and let that serve as a foundation piece for your room. If you can’t choose one that speaks to you, choose a pattern or color that can stand the test of time. This means that you should pick a foundation that will go well with your holiday trim, summer décor, and your overall lifestyle.
Step 2 Color Comparison
Take a look at the pattern or color you chose as your favorite and then take an even closer look. What tones and shades can you pick out? Does your pattern have subtly colored outline or a burst of pigment? The easiest way to choose your next design is to pick a color from your foundation piece and choose a similar pattern in that secondary color. For example, if you chose a blue and white stripe with a subtle gray outline as your foundation, take the gray from the first pattern and find a smaller or larger scale pattern for your next piece.
Step 3 Select and Scale
Now that you have two designs, you’re all set to mix in a few more colors and patterns. The navy and white stripe with gray outline now has a complementary pattern, a floral print with gray, charcoal, and white. When you’re choosing more patterns it’s always best to vary the scale and size of the design. If the stripes are thin, choose a macro floral print to offset the first petite pattern.
Step 4 Remember the Room
While choosing your patterns and colors, make sure to consider the room that they’re going in. Use the petite striped pattern on an arm chair, the floral pillows on the sofa, and a third design on a rug or window treatment to space out the pattern. By mixing color, pattern, and scale in different areas of the room you add balance and interest without too much cluttered décor.
See? That wasn’t very hard. It takes practice, sure, but it’s a simple puzzle to master. Don’t forget to complement your patterns with textured throws and pillows, as well as unique décor for a fashionable finishing touch. Do this with each room that needs a little massage and you’ll be on your way to revamping your style in no time.
