At the Design Lab, we’re always on the lookout for fun and unique products, especially those with fabulous backstories and a heart for giving. We’re proud to be sharing the spotlight with glassybaby, a Seattle-based glassblowing company founded by 3-time lung cancer surviver, Lee Rhodes.
glassybaby’s 80+ glassblowers create one-of-a-kind, hand-blown votive candle holders and drinking glasses in about 250 different colors, each with a unique name like Joy, Skinny Dip, Imagine, and Kindness.
Their backstory is one of our favorite founding stories to date. While going through treatment for her lung cancer, Lee gifted her husband a glassblowing class to get his mind off of their troubles. After a few of his classes, he presented Lee with a hand-crafted vessel, aka the first glassybaby. The company donates 10% of all sales to charity because of Lee’s courage and empathy. To date, glassybaby has given $4.5 million back to organizations that help people, animals, and the environment find healing.
Join us Monday, April 11 from 12-7pm as we host glassybaby’s California tour with a pop-up shop at our Design Lab. We’ll have bubbles and bites and plenty of beautiful glassybaby crafts. We’re fortunate to also have American Red Cross and Article Consignment donating their time and efforts, as well as a portion of their proceeds for the day, to the glassybaby’s philanthropic mission.
Three cheers for glassybaby, beautiful votives, and the courage shown by everyone facing their troubles.
